Questions & answers.
Investing in a pool is a big decision, and we know it comes with plenty of questions. Whether you’re curious about cost, installation, maintenance, or how a fibreglass Leisure Pool holds up through a Central Otago winter, we’re here to make the process as open and straightforward as possible. Below, we’ve answered the questions we hear most from homeowners, but if you don’t find what you’re looking for, just get in touch and we’ll talk you through it.
We’re local, hands-on, and personally invested in every pool we build. As the Otago dealer for Leisure Pools, we bring qualified building expertise: Tom is a New Zealand Master Builder and director of construction business Archi Build, and Kelly is a qualified interior designer who has worked in the construction industry for over 16 years.
We know more than just pools: we know the construction industry, and we know what it takes to create your dream pool.
We didn’t just get into pools as a business; we built our own pool for our home first, which is what inspired us to start the business. We understand what’s involved from the first conversation to the first swim, and beyond, and we’re here to support you on your journey.
We take on a limited number of builds each year so we can give every project the craftsmanship and attention it deserves, and we’re proud to have been named Leisure Pools New Zealand South Island Dealer of the Year in 2023 and 2025.

Leisure Pools is one of the largest fibreglass pool manufacturers in the world, with factories in Australia and America.
Their pools are built differently from most on the market. Every shell uses patented Composite Armour™ reinforcement with corrosion-resistant vinyl ester resin. This makes the shell stronger than most standard fibreglass pools, and gives steps and benches a solid, rigid feel underfoot rather than the flex you get with other fibreglass pool brands.
That quality is backed by a Lifetime Structural Warranty and Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty, among the strongest in the industry.
Combined with the design range, from family-friendly pools with splash pads and integrated slatted covers to compact plunge pools for tighter sections, there’s a Leisure Pool to suit almost any backyard and lifestyle.
This is, without a doubt, one of the first questions people ask, and rightfully so. It’s an important one.
There are many factors that go into calculating the cost. Pricing depends on the pool style, size, site access, ground conditions, and any extras you’d like included in your custom package: think filtration, pool covers, heat pumps, pump sheds, or landscaping.
The best way to get an accurate estimate is a free onsite visit and quote, where we can assess your property, talk through your options, and provide a personalised quote based on your site and needs.
We offer a fixed price for our pool packages, with earthworks being the only prime cost sum.

Installation timeframes vary depending on site conditions, pool size, and local council requirements.
Typically, the bulk of the install, from mark out and excavation through to the concrete bond beam, takes 2 weeks. From there, landscaping around the pool surround can commence.
We provide a personalised, detailed timeline during your consultation, based on your specific project.
Every pool build follows a similar journey, though the details are always tailored to your custom project.
Once we’ve assessed your property and settled on a design, we handle the council consent process if you’d like us to, or this can be done by your architect, landscaper, builder, or yourself, if preferred. We typically see the pool barrier building consent take around 4 weeks once lodged with council.
From there, our crew moves through mark out, excavation, overseeing electrical and plumbing services, pool delivery and installation, and the supply and installation of filtration, heat pump, and cover.
Most of this core work, from mark out and excavation through to the concrete bond beam, takes around two weeks, and once that’s done, landscaping around the pool can begin. We’ll keep you in the loop at every stage, so you always know what’s happening and what’s next.
Yes, most pool installations require building consent from your local council.
Dupont Pools can assist with the consent process, ensuring all work meets New Zealand building standards and pool safety requirements.
Yes. Under New Zealand’s Building Act 2004, any pool or spa capable of holding water 400mm deep or more must have a compliant safety barrier, including fibreglass pools.
Pool fences must prevent young children from climbing over, crawling under or through the fence, and you’ll need building barrier consent before building or altering a fence around a pool.
Dupont Pools can assist you with the barrier consent.
Absolutely. This is one of our strengths, and we work closely with architects, designers, and builders to make sure your pool is fully integrated into your new home design from the start. This includes coordinating on site layout, structural requirements, plumbing and electrical considerations, and how the pool ties in with both your indoor and outdoor living spaces. We bring our experience and knowledge to the table and can help your trades and designers plan the most beautiful pool space.
With Tom’s background as an NZ Master Builder and director of construction business Archi Build, we bring genuine construction knowledge to these conversations, not just pool expertise, so we can work seamlessly alongside your project team from design through to build.
Get in touch with Kelly & Tom early in your design process, and we’ll help make sure your pool and home come together perfectly.
Yes, you can purchase a Leisure Pools shell from us and install it yourself.
Please contact Dupont Pools if you wish to discuss this option further.
The filtration systems we supply with our pools offer smart technology, letting you keep an eye on what’s happening with your pool and water via an app on your device.
If you’re away for longer periods, simply time-poor, or if you rent your holiday home out, we can supply a list of trusted service people and valet services who can help keep your pool running so it’s ready to use whenever you’re at your holiday home.
The Dupont Pools team are based in Wānaka, so we’re available to go check on your pool or equipment if needed.
As a standard our pool packages are set up with a saltwater chlorination system. This generates chlorine naturally from dissolved salt, giving you all the sanitising benefits of chlorine, but gentler on skin and eyes, with less maintenance than manually dosing chlorine.
Mineral options are also available.
MagnaPool is a salt-free mineral pool system that uses magnesium and potassium instead of sodium, giving water a softer, silkier feel than standard salt or chlorine pools. It’s also gentler on the environment.
HaloPure is a low-salt chlorinator combined with a mineral sanitiser, giving softer, fresher water with minimal salty residue, plus smart automation to monitor your pool from your phone.
We’re happy to talk through which option suits your pool and preferences best. Get in touch with Kelly & Tom.
We’re based in Wānaka and proudly service the wider Central Otago region.

We typically see December to February as the natural swimming months in Central Otago, as the shoulder months either side can present cooler temperatures.
The good news is that you can continue to swim at home in the shoulder season due to the use of heat pumps and heating systems, and with a cover, you can comfortably extend your season. We typically see families using their Leisure Pool from Labour Weekend (October) through to Easter Week (mid-April).
Yes, solar is an option. That said, our region’s cold nights and shoulder-season temperature swings mean solar alone often isn’t enough to reliably heat your pool through the full swimming season. Most of our clients pair solar with a heat pump and pool cover for consistent warmth from Labour Weekend through to Easter, rather than relying on solar as the sole heat source.
Dupont Pools are happy to work with you and your heating specialist to design the right heating system for your pool. Thanks to our knowledge of the construction industry, we’re well placed to work with you on the best solution.
We typically supply and install a heat pump (sized to suit the water volume of your selected pool model) with our pool packages.
We’re happy to talk through the best heating combination for your pool and budget. Get in touch with Kelly & Tom.
Yes. Fibreglass has a natural flexibility that concrete simply doesn’t: it can expand and contract with temperature changes and ground movement without cracking, making it well suited to Central Otago’s cold winters and freeze-thaw cycles.
Leisure Pools’ Composite Armour™ technology adds extra strength on top of that flexibility, so the shell resists deflection while still moving with the ground rather than fighting against it.
Proper installation also plays a big role. This includes correct drainage and backfill techniques, plus a hydrostatic relief valve built into the base to equalise groundwater pressure.
Leisure Pools are built to last a lifetime. Every shell is backed by a Lifetime Structural Warranty and Lifetime Structural Osmosis Warranty, thanks to the use of corrosion-resistant vinyl ester resin throughout the shell. These are among the strongest warranties in the pool industry, made possible by their patented Composite Armour™ technology and full vinyl ester resin construction, which resists water penetration into the laminate (the cause of osmosis issues in lesser-quality fibreglass pools).
With proper installation and basic maintenance, a Leisure Pool is designed to be a true long-term investment for your home.
